Janis Joplin Skirt ↑
Two weeks after Jimi Hendrix overdosed in a London hotel room, and before Jim Morrison died in Paris, Janis Joplin expired in a budget motel in Hollywood. The “Queen of psychedelic soul” was born in Texas, but achieved her greatest fame in California. Her performances at the Whisky a-Go-Go, Shrine Auditorium, and the Hollywood Bowl with her band Big Brother and the Holding Company set the stage for an explosive concert at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967, and a legendary performance at Woodstock in 1969. One year later, she was back in Los Angeles recording her fourth album Pearl, hailed by Goldmine magazine as her masterpiece. On October 3rd she checked into the Landmark Motel on Franklin Avenue, shot up heroin, and dropped dead. The posthumous album was #1 for more than two months and sold 8 million copies. This beaded velvet skirt was pictured on the cover.
